ABOUT:

Extreme space weather events, while rare, can have significant effects all the way from the Sun to Earth's polar ice caps. They have been implicated in the depletion of ozone and cloud formation, and their signatures may even be seen in ice core records spanning more than 400 years into the past. Extreme solar activity at other planets, and elsewhere in the solar system, can be important, and violent flare activity can even be observed at other stars. Economically, these events may have severe consequences ranging from human exposure to increased radiation to disruption of communications and electrical power.

With recent advances in theory and the availability of new datasets, together with society's continually increasing reliance on technology, a coordinated study of extreme events and their impacts at Earth is both timely and necessary. In this second of two workshops on this interdisciplinary topic we will report on progress concerning several key scientific questions and address new questions and issues resulting from that progress.

This will be a "hands-on" workshop. Although there will be a few formal presentations, the working group sessions are primarily intended to be discussion-oriented. We will have poster boards available for relevant material and we encourage you to bring a limited set of slides to make specific points during the working group sessions. Ideally these should be emailed to the working group leader prior to the session.

The LWS Extreme Space Weather Events Workshop will be held at the Millennium Harvest Hotel, Boulder, CO (Date To Be Determined).

Extreme Space Weather Events 2012 Workshop Agenda

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

We had been planning to hold the second workshop this August, again in Boulder, but because of the current issues affecting NASA travel, and the importance of being able to support the travel of key attendees, we have decided that it would be better to postpone the workshop. As soon as we believe it's been sufficiently resolved or clarified for us to proceed, we will set a new date, which will likely be spring/early summer, 2014.
