Influenza virus affects millions of people around the world every year, causing flu-like symptom, respiratory hospitalizations and deaths. Most years we see the seasonal form of the virus, but every 10 or 20 years new strains emerge from an animal source and cause a pandemic.
We are interested in understanding and forecasting epidemics of influenza during pandemics and normal seasons. Working closely with the Defence Threat Reduction Agency, we have developed a suite of models designed to be part of the Biosurveillance Ecosysten (BSVE). We also participate in the Centre for Disease Control’s annual influenza forecasting exercise in which we submit weekly forecasts for influenza-like-illness during the US season.
